Having been fired up to 50ft in the air from a cannon, as part of Scott May's Daredevil stunt show; the recoil from the massive barrel (that was attached to a 7.5 tonne lorry) caused the safety net to collapse.
Luke Adams, 38, a spectator said "As the cannon went bang the truck recoiled. As it moved I could see the net drop to the ground. He landed on the grass head first and continued to roll forward but then stayed on his back motionless."
St John's Ambulancemen were on the scene and tried to help as best they could until an air ambulance arrived to take Matt Cranch to Maidstone Hospital, but he died a short time after.
Matt who was also known locally as Wiggles, was a well known face on the Newquay Dub and social scene. Matt drove a red VW Beetle and worked as a barman at the Watergate Bay Hotel until two weeks ago.
His former boss, managing director Will Ashworth, said: 'He was with us for three years and was an extremely popular guy and much loved by everybody here. Our thoughts are very much with his friends and family at this time.
'He was a valuable member of the team that we've got here. He left just two weeks ago.'
A spokesman for Kent Police said: ‘A man taking part in a human cannonball event this afternoon has died after it is believed a safety net failed to engage.’
A Health and Safety Executive investigation had been launched by Maidstone Borough Council.
